Even before passing through St. John's, Rogers felt a pang of regret on the train, and he wondered why he was going. A sentimental journey did not appear to be in his plans. But no good answer was given — at least none that a Board of Directors or a Shareholders' Meeting would have found satisfactory. The ancient vicar spoke to him in an odd manner. "We haven't forgotten you any more than you have forgotten us," he stated. "And the place hasn't forgotten you either, despite the fact that it's been empty for years." Rogers dismissed it.
