The book is meant to lay out Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection at its present state, without picking one side over the other. As paraphrased from the book's preface: "The following pages do not aim to debate the pros and cons of Darwin's theory of the origin of species. Rather, they aim to present facts that support this theory, collected in South America where Darwin first got the idea to study "the origin of species." New and valuable material is needed to decide the controversy, and this is more important than reanalyzing what we already have. It is also fair to let Darwin defend his theory from his opponents before further examining it."
