In a 2008 interview with Ramona Koval, Richard Holmes said, ?Well, you always look back as a biographer; you?re interested in how things began, the origin of things.?
Inspiration for the book came from a lecture that Holmes gave at the Royal Society in 1998 or 1999, when he developed an unusual interest in literary giant Samuel Coleridge and chemist Humphry Davy. His previous works were of the Romantic Age literary figures and he noted that the scientists of that era must have been taking great strides in their work, too. He researched on this idea for the next decade while studying for his MA in Biography at the University of East Anglia.
